Coal: Government Incentives
Non Renewable Energy

Coal a Major Power in Britain.

The business and enterprise secretary, John Hutton, announced that Britain will need to build a lot more coal fired plants. His concern is the growing state of energy worldwide and where it comes from.

The country is trying to continue its reduction on foreign oil and gas. Since they get 25% of their natural gas from Russia, there is a growing need to diversify and quickly.

Clean Coal-Futuregen

There are a lot of government incentives and money spent on technology for cleaner coal. "Futuregen" is a project that is scheduled to spend 1.5 billion dollars on the integrated sequestration and hydrogen production research power plants. Their goal is to cut emissions of coal burning power plants by 95 percent and have a plant operational by 2012.

The department of Energy reports that their clean coal power initiative has chosen four projects  to fund, totaling 300 million dollars. One of the major reasons that the United States government spends enormous amounts on coal is because it is cheap. The U.S. has a vast supply of coal. It makes coal very cost effective.
