Billions of people use mobile phones, and for many of them they are an important part of their everyday life. It enables them to stay it touch with friends and family, to contact easily people from work, and basically to talk to anyone on the planet regardless of distance or location. But there is another side to mobile phones which is not so obvious for most users: the environmental issues created by their Lithium-ion batteries.
The Lithium-ion batteries integrated into mobile phones need to be recharged every few days. For most people that's not a big deal, but energy sources used by most power plants that generate electricity are not naturally replenished. But surely charging a single mobile phone every once in a while can't be that bad for the planet? Charging a single device is not a catastrophe, but when there are billions of mobile phones it all adds up.
And then of course there is the Lithium-ion battery manufacturing process which still is in many cases not entirely green. We are not even going to talk about the other parts of a mobile phone which are usually made without much regard to pollution.
According to Green Peace, some manufacturers such as Nokia and Sony Erickson are really trying to design mobile phones which are as green as possible but many other companies still lag behind. Nonetheless, progress is slowly but steadily made in this area and new products tend to be more and more environmentally friendly.
But an innovation that shows a lot of promise is a concept device that comes from neither of the two companies mentioned above.
Introducing the Leaf Phone
Both a green gadget and a fashion accessory, the Leaf phone designed by Junyi Heo and Seungkyn Woo is a Eco mobile phone concept unlike any other device found on the market.
Leaf phone is a wearable green wrist phone powered by solar energy. It is an extremely flexible device that rolls up like a conventional wristwatch. Solar cells are incorporated into its front, allowing it to charge when not in use.
The innovative phone bracelet has a slim, elegant design that easily grabs one's attention. It has a smooth finish that combines two colors, green and white. Multiple layers of a special, flexible material are pressed together tightly, allowing the phone to wrap easily around a person's wrist. The device itself is thin and looks nothing like the average mobile phone. It uses two magnets at each end to secure itself when used as a wristband.
When it comes to the technical specifications, iPhone users might be disappointed: it only offers the features of a very basic phone that allows one to make and receive calls and send and receive messages. It doesn't support an email client or a Web browser or anything of the kind, but its unique design and solar batteries compensate.
Overall, the Leaf device is an Eco mobile phone concept that is bound to grab a lot of attention. It's green, elegant, easy to use and targets all those who wish to conserve energy.
