Futuristic Green Ideas and their Potential

The research and development of modern green technologies is progressing at a steady pace, but it is still nice to look a bit further into the future and predict what it may bring. In this article, we are going to take a closer look at some futuristic ideas that actually look viable and seem to have a lot of potential.

Energy

No article about green ideas can do without something related to alternative sources of energy and it has to be said that some ideas just look too good to be true. Cold fusion (low temperature nuclear reaction), for example, promises to provide cheap and clean energy for the entire planet, but scientists have been unable to prove its functionality for quite a long time and many are now even starting to doubt the existence of this process. Still, there is a lot of research going on in Italy and, with so much on the line, the quest for this holy grail is probably never going to stop.

Self-sufficient Cities

The idea of having huge cities that would be self-sufficient and ecologically sustainable might still be a bit too futuristic, but there are real plans of having exactly that done on a smaller scale. Skyscrapers that are energetically self-sufficient should be built in the near future and things can certainly pick up from there – towns, islands, cities, countries. It is a long road, but it can probably be done even without miraculous technologies like cold fusion.

Agriculture

Loss of agriculturally valuable land can become a huge problem in the future, but it seems that there are some possible solutions. Some scientists are researching the possibility of having urban farms built in cities. Those would work like normal skyscrapers with individual floors dedicated to various crops. Elaborate irrigation systems and air conditioning would keep the ideal conditions. Such centers could produce large amounts of food with little or no environmental footprint. The only problems that are keeping those plans from realization is the enormous initial investment and the fact that there are virtually no guarantees.

As you can see, there are no limits when it comes to futuristic predictions and ideas. And although some of them may look a bit unreal right now, technology is advancing very fast and you never know what lies just around the corner. Some of these ideas are certainly going to become reality very soon!
