Green Technologies in Sustainable Housing

New green technologies and products are now widely available and people are already looking into various possibilities of sustainable housing. Many options of sustainable housing are still considered to be quite expensive, but the situation is set to change in the future and it will become very popular in the end. Even now, the high initial investment should be viewed in light of the fact that the operating costs are usually much smaller than those of standard housing.

So what are the features of sustainable housing? Well, sustainable housing uses modern green technologies in order to use energy and other resources more efficiently while producing less waste and little or no air pollution. These goals are kept in mind during the entire construction process and even the initial design has to take everything into account.

Design and Construction

Modern building materials (in the case of green buildings, building materials have to come from sources that do not inherently burden the environment) can provide sufficient insulation to the house, so there is no need for heating throughout most of the year. Windows also play a huge role, so emphasis is put on their quality and placement.

If the location is suitable enough, solar panels can be placed on the roof of the building. This does not obviously mean that the building will be energetically self-sufficient, but solar energy can be used for water heating or minor appliances. That can drive the operating costs down without any reduction of comfort.

Waster and Pollution

Regarding waste and pollution, green technologies offer ways of reducing those to the absolute minimum. Biological waste can be composted and used as a fertilizer in gardens or greenhouses, for example. Water that comes from dish-washing or laundry can be treated by small sewage treatment units and re-used on-site. The production of waste-water can also be limited by the use of modern green technologies like low-flush toilets and low-flow shower heads that can reduce water consumption and ensure increased efficiency.

All of these minor details also ultimately lead to lower energy requirements of the entire site. This can directly affect the entire grid, especially if these measures are adopted on a global level. As a result of that, the saved energy can be used for different purposes or removed from the grid altogether. In the case of fossil fuelled power plant, for example, that would lead to less global pollution and better environment.
