Green Technology and Cars

The automobile industry is often criticized for its environmental impact and it has to be said that it has been ignoring those criticisms for quite a long time. After all, cars play a huge role in our lives and it is not likely that we are going to stop using them for any reason. Nevertheless, even the biggest manufacturers are now developing new technologies that would reduce pollution and other environmental problems. So what can be changed when it comes to cars?

Alternative Fuels

The biggest and the most obvious problem is fuel. The most cars are equipped with engines that run on petrol or diesel. These engines pollute air and contribute to global environmental problems. However, it is clear that they will have to be replaced with something different – not only because of their negative impact, but also because of the fact that oil reserves are not unlimited and will run out at some point in the future.

Many manufacturers have already developed cars that store energy in batteries. These cars, which are usually called all-electric, are not producing any tailpipe emissions. At first, there were concerns about the speed and the maximum range of these cars, but many of these concerns are now gone. Modern all-electric cars are not far behind their petrol counter-parts and the situation is set to improve even more. Nevertheless, there still are some huge problems that have not been successfully solved yet. Most importantly, the availability of charging stations needs to improve dramatically in the future. Also, all-electric cars are still quite expensive at the moment.

Unorthodox Solutions

All-electric cars with batteries are not the only solution. Many biofuels are readily available even nowadays, but many companies seem to believe that they are not very versatile and practical in the long run. Nevertheless, the production of various biofuels is constantly growing and their efficiency is improving, so their popularity might easily grow in the near future, especially since cars that run on biofuels remain relatively cheap and available.

Numerous experiments have also been done with fuels like hydrogen or compressed air. Research is still continuing and at least some of these rather unorthodox fuels seem to have bright future. Many governments and companies are investing huge sums into the research and it is clear that we are going to see some major changes in the future. And it is not going to take long.
