Green Vehicles of the Future

Environmentally friendly vehicles or green vehicles are expected to set the norm in the years to come in terms of efficiency and performance for road motor cars.

The negative impact gas emissions from gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles have on the planet and the high price of oil are the key factors that drive the gradual transition toward green vehicles.

Introduction to Green Vehicles

Even though sometimes there are conflicting definitions as to what exactly a green vehicle is, most people tend to agree that any road motor vehicle that has a less negative effect on the environment than a conventional vehicle is a green vehicle.

The term environmentally friendly vehicles is frequently used in some European countries members of the EU and denotes vehicles that have reduced gas emissions and outstrip the Euro-6 standard.

Green vehicles are classified according either to the fuel on which they run or to the advanced technologies they use.

* Hybrid electric vehicles typically combine the conventional internal combustion engine with an electric motor to generate the power they need to run. They also feature a set of rechargeable batteries which are placed usually in the back of the car and which power the electric engine. There are many subcategories of hybrid electric vehicles. For example, some use biofuels instead of gasoline for the internal combustion engine while others use exclusively the electric motor to power the drivetrain while the internal combustion engine is used exclusively to generate electricity.

* Plug-in electric vehicles use high capacity batteries that require constant recharging and that eliminate altogether the need for an internal combustion engine running on diesel or gasoline. They are becoming quite popular around the globe and especially in Japan. Currently however, the reduced efficiency of batteries and the overall production costs prevent them for being widely adopted.

* Hydrogen and fuel-cell vehicles use special engines that run on new-generation fuels that reduce or prevent gas emissions altogether. Not quite as widespread as electric hybrids, these vehicles are considered to have great potential even though many more years of research will be needed until they will become a viable alternative for average person.

Production

Green vehicles are considered new-generation vehicles because they cut down gas emissions and help reduce oil imports. They can have a tremendous impact on any country's economy. Besides their obvious advantages over conventional vehicles, they are also expected to change the way cars are driven and maintained.

In order to cut fuel consumption and production costs and to minimize the negative impact the manufacturing process has on the planet, green vehicles tend to be smaller and lighter than conventional vehicles. In many cases, especially when it comes to experimental models, they also tend to simplify the driving experience. Also, features that are unessential are removed to obtain a better overall energy efficiency.

In the end, green cars differ from average cars in three main aspects. Firstly, they use alternative propulsion systems and energy sources. Secondly, they are more easy to maintain. Thirdly, they are devoid of unnecessary components that add weight and that reduce fuel efficiency.
