In your life, you are probably doing everything you can to preserve our environment: recycling, switching to energy-efficient vehicles and appliances, and conserving water. Wouldn't it be nice if you could shop greener as well? You can. One way to do so is to purchase products made from recycled materials or environmentally friendly ingredients. Another way is to promote businesses that incorporate eco-friendly practices. There are many companies that are making greener choices in their operations but a few are taking it seriously and are going above and beyond in their efforts to care for the planet. Here are some of the environmental superstars:
* Intel, manufacturer of electronic chips for computers, is making tremendous efforts to promote green energy by purchasing 2.5 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy certificates, providing 100% of their energy usage. In addition, they have installed on-site solar power systems at several of their facilities. In further attempts to go green, Intel has implemented programs to control emissions, promote water conservation, and participate in recycling at all of their facilities.
* Kohl's, a department store chain, is ranked #2 on the EPA's list of retail renewable energy purchasers, with 100% of their energy consumption coming from renewable sources. Kohl's is also currently installing solar power systems in 100 of its stores in six states. In an effort to cut emissions, Kohl's has 41% of their inbound goods transported by rail, which is much less harmful to the environment.
* Starbucks, coffee house giant, is also making a great effort to go green. At this time, 50% of their energy use comes from renewable energy sources. They are also working on replacing Styrofoam cups with a more environmentally-friendly alternative, expanding their recycling program, reducing water waste, purchasing more ecologically responsible materials, and implementing energy-efficient building designs.
* Johnson & Johnson, manufacturer of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and beauty aids, is another green powerhouse. They purchase 100% of their used energy from renewable sources and have added 978 hybrid vehicles to the corporate fleet.
* Staples office supply stores not only use 100% green power but also produce 1.8 million kilowatts of energy per year from their own 30 rooftop solar power systems. They also make it a policy to make as many purchases as possible from green suppliers.
* REI, provider of outdoor gear, has an ambitious plan to become completely climate neutral by the year 2020. They currently fill 92% of their power needs from green energy. In addition, REI funds an environmental education program and contributes to several eco-friendly causes.
It is encouraging to see companies making such strides toward environmental responsibility. We as consumers can encourage more businesses to do the same. When you dine out or make any purchase, choose to do business with companies that are environmentally friendly. Money talks in the corporate world. Make yours say "go green."
