How the Smart Grid will Effect Renewable Energy

President Obama announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 that there will be $3.4 billion in government grants given to companies across the United States to help improve the existing grid and move towards the creation of a "Smart Grid".

With all this money being spent towards the creation of the smart grid, what does this mean for renewable energy? One of the main reasons that so many of us care about this project, is that it creates a real possibility to have much of our electricity come from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. Renewable energy holds the key to cutting down on harmful pollutants in our air. Currently our energy grid is not made to handle large amounts of the electricity that is created by alternative energy. With this announcement, the tables have completely turned. Instead of being behind in our grid's capability, we will be proactive.

The "smart grid" will allow another aspect of energy creation, which has long been relegated to people who live on farms or want to live "off grid". With having large section of electricity creation coming from renewables, it entices more people to move back onto the grid. It also allows for people who want to create their own electricity to easily create and sell back extra power to the grid. Creating electricity becomes a venture that not only big power companies can do, but every household can.

Over the next ten years we can expect major changes in how we think about the creation of electricity. Instead of thinking about coal and nuclear plants that spit countless amounts of pollution into the air, we will be talking about wind, solar and geothermal plants that produce an abundance of clean, renewable energy.
