First there was the eco-TV, now it is the Eco Computer. The UK Based NEC Computers Company has released the first eco computer. The short specs are a 900 MHz computer with a Transmeta processor. It goes for about $750. It is Energy Star compliant. It has a lead free motherboard and the LCD screen contains no boron. The heat and power usage is less than traditional computers.
The computer is a nice computer; it is an all-in-one computer. There is no computer box, and no fan. It is a pretty quiet computer. At 750 dollar, it won't break the bank. It has all the amenities that you need for most computers, pretty solid computer for that price.
There are some drawbacks to the eco computer. The design is unique, having no computer box may not be the style that you want or are used to. If you need more memory or a faster computer, you will need to upgrade to a different PC.
While at the moment, the NEC is the primary eco computer, other companies such as Dell, HP, and Apple make similar computer.
If you are looking for a simple way to go "green" or for a nice solid computer for the family or student, then the NEC might be something to look into. If you like the idea and design of the all-in-one go for it. At $750 dollars, we are encouraged that going "green" is becoming more affordable.
