What do Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Ken Salazar, Steven Chu, T. Boone Pickens, George Pataki, Van Jones, Wall Mart, the USGBA, AFL/CIO and many other groups all have in common? Clean Energy.
On Monday February 23, 2009 they all got together for a round table discussion. The National Clean Energy Project was formed to promote a dialogue on how to deal with the energy crisis and hopefully get to a clean energy based society.
As they all presented their interests they all had some fairly common themes that need to be addressed. The main issue with switching to renewable energy is transmission. The current transmission lines in the United States cannot handle renewable energy surges. This means that even if you had all the energy to supply everyone's needs, it would not be able to be handled by the lines that are up. The problem is exacerbated by the storage issue.
Another point that many agreed on was brought forth by Former President Bill Clinton, conservation. Americans need to learn about how to conserve and tips on saving energy. Some other thoughts brought forth said that we need to start thinking about our homes as mini power plants. Reworking the way our energy companies do business is a must.
The final and extremely main push of the conference was green jobs. As Van Jones said about green careers was that the green wave should hit all the boats. The economy is growing greener. Building retrofitting, energy efficient buildings, wind and solar installers and all sorts of other green jobs will be hitting the market. The market needs to be ready to embrace this.
