Pros and Cons of Using Alternative Energy in Your Home
As with any major decision, there are pros and cons that need to be considered when deciding to use alternative energy in your home. As you can see, the pros have it.
Cost
The majority of alternative energy harvesting and storage devices have a low maintenance cost. One argument about cost being a con is that it can require a high implementation cost. This will be offset, however, by the reduced cost of monthly utility bills and high maintenance costs. This moves cost into the pro section because the overall savings are vastly greater than the startup cost. And because alternative energy sources are always there, the price will never rise due to the scarcity of the source. Also, as technological advances improve the generation, capture and release of alternative energy sources, these costs will continue to drop.
Sustainability
Unlike nonrenewable resources, there is no fear of alternative energy sources ever becoming scarce. The wind, water and sun are always a part of environment, ready to be used. This may also affect the cost scenario, because as supply and demand shows, when a product becomes scarce, it becomes more expensive. There is no need to spend additional government money to replant landscapes damaged by drilling, mining, fraking or land clearing.
Tax Incentives
Many governments are now offering tax credits and/or breaks to individuals and companies that switch to alternative energy sources. Include this with the money saving you'll have in your pocket, and this could mean even more money in your pockets. This is because a credit decreases tax liability by the dollar, not by a percentage. Local and state governments may also offer tax incentives as well.
Non-Polluting
Because it does not require manufacturing, alternative energy reduces, if not minimizes, many pollutants that common power sources produce, such as fine particle dust, carbon dioxide emissions, and even radioactivity. This not only ensures our environment and Earth will last longer and be more beautiful for future generations, it will also reduce sickness and illnesses drastically.
Continuity
Many argue that alternative energy cannot supply power continuously. This is, in fact, erroneous. The power generated by alternative energy is much greater than the power that will be consumed. It simply needs to be stored to be used at later dates, as in a backup generator. There is also a lower risk of power interruption since there are minimal lines to be downed during storms and severe weather.
Cons
The two most common cons among alternative energy sources can be overcome as technology increases. The fact that many generators and storage devices take a large amount of land may be drastically increased as technology provides answers on how to compact the size of these equipments. For the time, however, they remain bulky. Many people also argue that the equipment is not aesthetically appealing. Then again, I find that the numerous substations, towers and transformers are not aesthetically appealing, either. This seems to be an illogical complaint, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and most people feel that a small amount of ugliness now that will reduce a large amount of ugliness later is worth the minute deterioration of beauty, especially when it will save money, the environment, the climate, and essentially, human kind's health and happiness.
