With almost everyone concerned about helping reduce the harmful effects on the planet the smart grid has emerged as a great solution. Smart grids usually refer to the electricity's grid system; however it can really refer to any system that uses technology to provide energy and power to consumers while reducing waste and improving the environment.

Smart grids are changing the way people get the energy to power their homes, reducing the costs of that energy, and reducing the effects of providing that energy has on the planet. The use of the smart grid is very beneficial to everyone involved.

Smart grids are changing the way consumers actually get the energy required to power their homes. The smart grid uses a variety of features. It offers different resources to produce the energy. Recent innovations allow utility companies to use renewable resources like wind, water, and sunlight to produce energy. This means massive production of energy which is stored until the consumer needs the energy. Also the smart grids are typically smaller than the conventional grid used in the past. This means fewer power outages in more populated regions because of less demand on a few plants to supply thousands with energy.

By using recent innovations, smart grids lower the cost of energy for both the consumers and the power companies. One such innovation is the smart meter. Smart meters use digital technology to communicate with the companies about how much energy is actually used. They use intervals of one hour or less to determine how much energy the consumer actually uses. This helps lower the cost to the consumer because a person only pays for what is actually used. It lowers costs for the company because the company can determine how much energy is needed for that grid and produce only what is required. Also by using renewable resources the cost of producing that energy is lower. There are no spikes in operating costs like in using fossil fuels where the price fluctuates with the price of oil or coal.

Environmentally beneficial

Finally the smart grids have impacted the environment for the better. Smart grids use the innovations in technology to provide energy that is greener. By using alternative methods for producing energy for homes, smart grids reduce pollutants that harm the planet. Nonrenewable resources like oil and coal leave huge carbon footprints when used. The renewable alternatives leave fewer by products that hurt the planet. Remember that oil and coal cannot be replenished when depleted which means those products will eventually run out. Wind, water, and sunlight are abundantly available and can be replenished quickly. Why not use what nature gave to produce the energy needed to operate daily functions?

Smart grids have had huge effects on many aspects. They reduce waste, lower costs for everyone, and change the way energy is supplied to the consumer. Renewable resources can be used easily and help improve more than the environment. As technology improves, the smart grids will become better. The effects from the use of smart grids will only get better as the next generation of smart grids is developed.
