The Future of Solar Energy

With the world's fossil fuel reserves slowly running out, many industries have already started to look for new sources of energy. Nuclear energy might look safe and effective, but there are some huge risks associated with it. That option is also pretty unpopular thanks to various protests and public initiatives. As a result of that, alternatives like wind energy or solar energy are now in the centre of attention. Due to its availability, solar energy is proving to be especially popular. So what will its role be in the future? And for what exactly can it be used?

The Advantages of Solar Energy

In comparison with the alternatives, solar energy has one huge advantage – it is available almost everywhere in the world. It is basically impossible to use wind or water energy in your house or company. Meanwhile, solar panels can be installed even on roofs of individual residences. Even individuals can therefore use solar energy to generate electricity or heat water. The only problem comes with storage, because solar energy is not available at night and many appliances require constant supply of electricity. However, even that issue can be solved with batteries or phase change materials.

Other Uses

But solar energy does not have to be used only for water heating and generating electricity for households. In fact, it can be used for almost anything. Some car manufacturers have already produced cars that run on solar energy without any negative side-effects (air pollution, too much noise). NASA scientists have even experimented with solar-powered aircraft. And, it has to be added, with reasonable successes. It is not clear whether this technology can actually be used for commercial aviation, but research is continuing at a steady pace.

Furthermore, many governments are encouraging people to use this type of energy by providing various subsidies and tax reductions. This financial support can sometimes be used even by individuals and families, so solar panels are now spreading across the planet at a previously unseen rate.

Since solar energy can be used for so many different purposes, it is clear that this widely available source of energy will also be one of the most used sources in the future. Solar power is free and problems with storage can be easily solved, so there is no reason to think that solar energy is not indeed the energy of the future. It can even be used as a cheap source of energy for space travel!
