Travel and Green Technology

Green technologies are slowly becoming a significant part of our lives and they are affecting almost everything we do. However, the area that has been affected the most is travel. And that term does not obviously mean just cars. Green technologies and products can be found everywhere.

It is clear that there are some options that are not associated with any environmental concerns. And it is certainly true that the popularity of walking and cycling has been rising even in large cities, but it nevertheless seems that many are still underestimating the potential of these means of transportation. Some large cities are actually offering systems with bikes that can be rented for free with a lot of success, although that solution can't be implemented everywhere for obvious reasons.

Public Transport

Public transportation systems have already received major overhauls in many countries, as new green technologies can bring down many operating costs. For example, some cities are now using buses that run on biofuels, electricity, or fuel cells. Sometimes, these buses can be refueled in individual bus stops, which allow them to be lighter and faster. Guided buses with dedicated tracks can also lower the environmental impact.

Aviation

While cars that do not harm the environment are already on the market, the aviation industry is also doing everything it can in order to prepare better planes. And researchers are not looking just into fuels - better aerodynamics and more effective route planning can also reduce the negative side-effects. We are obviously quite far from commercial airplanes that would run on solar power, but experiments have shown that this route might not be as unviable as it may seem.

Maritime Industry

Ships have also received a lot of attention, since the negative side-effects of the maritime industry are well-documented and heavily criticized. New technologies are being developed, but it will be extremely difficult to implement them on a global scale. The production of large modern vessels is very time-consuming and takes a lot of money, so companies are not willing to invest in unproven technologies as much as in other industries.

As you can see, green technologies are slowly making their way into all types of transportation. In some cases, changes have already been successfully introduced on a relatively large scale. In others, research and development still need to progress further. The huge costs of new technologies are sometimes slowing the entire process down, but things seem to be moving in the right direction.
