There are many types of alternative energy, but it is clear that only some of them are practical enough for widespread use. Wind energy definitely belongs to that group and its growing popularity easily confirms that. But what are the actual uses of wind energy? And can wind energy be used even on small scale?
History
First of all, it is important to note that the concept of wind energy is very old. The first civilized societies were using wind power for sailing. The very first ships relied heavily on wind power and that concept has not changed since. Even nowadays, small yachts are very popular and can be seen on many small lakes. Wind power has also been used in agriculture - the large number of mills is a clear evidence of that.
Modern Days
But what about now? Scientists have found out that wind power can be used for generating electricity, but much research had to be done in order to find the optimal solution. Modern wind turbines are the result of many years of development, but the results seem to be very good indeed. Many countries are installing wind turbines in suitable places for numerous reasons. The generated electricity is relatively cheap and wind turbines do not harm the environment in any way. However, there are some downsides as well – the initial investment is relatively high and the turbines cannot be placed everywhere for various reasons.
Small-scale Use
It is pretty hard to use wind energy for small-scale use, but that does not mean that it is completely impossible. On the contrary, small wind turbines can be used for various small appliances. The entire concept is relatively simple - the appliance is fitted with a battery that can be recharged by the turbine. As a result of that, the appliance can work even without being connected to the regular grid. That basically means that it can function independently and without any operating costs. Small-scale wind turbines can also be placed almost anywhere and, as a result of that, the appliance is also very mobile.
In conclusion, it can be said that wind energy has been in use for centuries and it is definitely not going to go away. It is certainly not the solution for world's problems and it cannot be used on a global scale, but it can improve the situation in many locations and provide electricity without harming the environment.
